Wonderlust

illustration + animation

  • This was created as project during graduate school (Fall of 2021) to create a visual experience based upon a sound. Any method could be explored.

  • I was inspired by the music…

After listening to the original score, I created a moodboard, storyboards and experimented with the technique - it was a lot of trial and error.

It was a completely new technique to me. I used gouache paint mixed with vegetable glycerin to slow the drying the process of the paint on the glass plate. I used Dragonframe to take every picture and create the animation sqeuence. Then, I used Davini Resolve and PremierPro for editing.

  • It showcases a journey - taking viewers through inspirational scenes that focus on finding direction.

They are interwoven with line art imagery of a person showing how experiences are all connected, thus creating scene transitions and an emotional response to be interpreted by the viewer.

About the Process

This project was completely outside of my comfort zone but I loved every second of it.

It is inspired by the music, an original score by Stephen Burke.

After listening to the score, I created a moodboard, storyboards and experimented with the technique - it was a lot of trial and error…

It was a completely new technique to me and I wanted to challenge myself. I was excited by the endless possibilities.

Exhibition

The animation debuted at Rochester Institute’s of Technology’s faculty exhibition in the Fall of 2023 at the Bevier Gallery on campus.
